As if Sigma hadn’t given us enough today. With new 70mm f/2.8 Macro and 105mm f/1.4 Art series lenses, we were already pretty excited. But Sigma also have an extra gift for Sony shooters. Both of the two new lenses today, as well as nine of their popular Art series full frame lenses are being released with a native Sony E-Mount. A native Sony mount offers advantages over simply using the Canon mount version with the Sigma MC-11 adapter. Such as compatibility with Sony’s continuous (AF-C) and high speed autofocus. And you’ll likely see some Eye-AF improvements, too. Very handy if you’ve been eyeing up that new Sony A7III.

That’s quite the list that’ll be sure to satisfy many Sony shooters, especially those who have anything to do with landscape, weddings or portraits. The lenses will offer the same high performance we’ve come to expect with Nikon & Canon systems, but will work better on Sony than when using an MC-11 adapter. Sigma also seems to suggest that they’re opening up Sony E-Mount in the Mount Conversion Service. So, if you already own the Canon version of one of these lenses and currently use it with an MC-11, you may soon be able ship it off to Sigma, pay a small fee, and have it converted over to a native Sony mount. – Sigma Press Release This all appears possible thanks to a deal Sigma have struck up with Sony to actually license the E-Mount officially. They don’t have to reverse engineer it in order to try to keep things compatible. So, even though Sony may still be slacking in the lens department, they are looking out for you guys. Update 8th March – Sigma have announced that prices for the Sony E Mount Sigma lenses will be the same as their Nikon, Canon & Sigma mount counterparts.
